- Abstract:
- In
this article, Euromonitor International compares the expansion
strategies of Carrefour and Wal-Mart in China. Retailing sales in China
have been characterised by dynamism, with growth reaching around 13
percent in 2007. Recent changes in legislation, allowing foreign
retailers to have full ownership of their Chinese operations, as well as
changes in the retail landscape, driven by the rise of an urban middle
class, accompanied by a growing demand. These factors combined to lead
to the rapid growth of international hypermarkets chains, and for the
two international retailers, China remains one of their most important
foreign markets.
